Peter joined the Centre as a PhD candidate to work on problems combining vision with language, and in particular the challenging task of building machines that can describe what they see.  This is a crucial robotic competence for natural interaction with robots, yet it still presents significant challenges given the enormous range of possible objects and environments. Peter’s research project aims to develop new models and evaluation metrics for approaching this problem, as existing approaches are unlikely to scale to open-domain environments. His research interests are in machine learning, in particular, deep learning.

Peter graduated from UNSW with a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer) degree with first class honours and medal in December 2012. While at UNSW Peter worked on vision and localisation for the RoboCup SPL robot soccer team. He also has experience working in several computer vision/robotics start-ups and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance & Economics) degree with first class honours and medal from USyd.

He completed his PhD in 2018 and moved with his family to Atlanta to take up the position of Research Scientist in Computer Vision & Deep Learning at Georgia Tech. In 2020 Peter joined Google Research as a Research Scientist in the Language team, working on problems at the intersection of computer vision and natural language processing.
