Alex Martin

  • Research Engineer
  • Australian National University
  • 2014 - 2020

In 2008 Alex started at ANU in the Computer Vision and Robotics group lead by Professor Rob Mahony. He has been involved with projects including machine vision and learning, multi camera array sensors, high speed optical flow hardware on quad rotors and human/collaborative robot interaction.  The lab has a 4WD vehicle that is used for acquiring various data sets, numerous quadrotor aerial vehicles and a flight environment with VICON.  It also has various robotic manipulators and a work cell used for computer vision and human/robot interaction.

On a day-to-day basis Alex works on projects as well as managing the lab administration, WHS and safe working procedures, procurement as well as emergency fast turnaround hardware repair and fabrication.  The workshop has a small but productive suite of digital fabrication tools including a laser cutter, 3D printer, CNC mill, and CNC router as well as various hand tools and an electronics fabrication space. He conducts student supervision as well as student and staff inductions into the workshop and workspace area.  Electronics, both hardware and firmware development, are favourite areas of his.

In his spare time Alex wrestles his two young children, improves his photographic skills and works on various art and design projects.
